United States Ship DRUM (SSN 677)
April 15, 1972
The USS Drum was commissioned on April 15, 1972. The guest speaker at the commissioning ceremony was Rear Admiral Maurice H. Rindskopf, Coordinator, Deep Submergence Systems Program. Admiral Rindskopf was on the commissioning crew of the first USS Drum (SS-228), serving in various billets until June, 1944 when he assumed command. As Drum's captain, Adm. Rindskopf was awarded the Navy Cross for sinking three and damaging three enemy ships.
The days ceremonies were culminated by a ships party with dinner, dancing and plenty of "refreshments". After the dinner/dance, many of the crew continued the party at "Helen's Place", which was the well known submariners watering hole in Vallejo.
